FORT STEWART - Capt. Jon Gills used to be as blind as a bat.

Contact lenses were nice, but his Army schedule wasn’t always convenient for the constant cycle of removing, rinsing, cleaning and reapplying.

“Basically, because of training, it forces you to wear glasses,” Gills said.

While he might not have been wearing those awkward, military-issued “BCGs” - birth control glasses, a popular nickname for the thick faux tortoise frames the U.S. armed forces have issued over the years - the glasses were still enough of a hassle for the junior officer to seriously consider elective eye surgery to correct his vision.
On a related note, May Eye Care is giving away a free LASIK procedure to an active member of the Armed Forces.  Click here to learn more or to nominated yourself, a friend or family member.
